Every utility-scale plant interacts with the territory that hosts it. For this reason, GDS Sole Italie considers environmental, landscape and territorial aspects from the earliest stages of project assessment.
The objective is not only to produce renewable energy, but to develop plants capable of integrating into the local context, preserving environmental balances and enhancing the characteristics of the territory.
For every new initiative, the constraints present, environmental sensitivities, landscape, biodiversity and hydraulic characteristics of the area are analysed. Project feasibility is closely linked to the results of these preliminary assessments.
Environmental integration is therefore not a subsequent phase of development, but a principle that guides the entire project lifecycle: from site selection to design, from construction through to plant decommissioning.

The environment at the centre of preliminary assessment

Before initiating any project, GDS Sole Italie carries out an in-depth analysis of the site to verify its compatibility with a photovoltaic plant. The preliminary study takes into consideration the territorial context, regulatory and landscape constraints, the presence of natural habitats, agronomic, geological and hydraulic aspects, as well as the characteristics of the surrounding landscape. Only areas presenting conditions compatible with sustainable development are considered suitable for proceeding with the project process.
During the permitting phase, specialist studies and technical reports are also prepared, enabling the effects of the project on the environment to be assessed and the most appropriate mitigation measures to be defined.
The quality of a project does not depend solely on the quantity of energy produced, but also on its capacity to integrate into the territory and minimise its impacts.

From design to implementation: concrete environmental integration measures

Each plant is designed on the basis of the specific characteristics of the site and the indications emerging from the environmental studies.
Mitigation measures are progressively refined during the permitting process and may be supplemented with additional requirements requested by the competent authorities. While every project is unique, there are several central themes that guide GDS Sole Italie's environmental approach.

Landscape integration

Landscape integration
The harmonious insertion of the plant into the landscape is one of the most important aspects of design.

For this reason, vegetation mitigation works are generally planned along the perimeter of the site, through the creation of hedgerows, rows of trees or green areas made up of native species, selected according to the local ecological and landscape characteristics. These interventions help reduce the visual impact of the plant and promote its integration into the surrounding context.

Water management and soil protection

The proper management of stormwater is a fundamental element in ensuring the long-term sustainability of the plant.

During design, the runoff of rainwater, the morphology of the land and the presence of existing hydraulic infrastructure — such as ditches, irrigation channels, basins and wetlands — are assessed. The objective is to preserve the hydrological balance of the area, limit erosive phenomena and ensure correct drainage of surfaces throughout the entire operational period of the plant.

Biodiversity and habitat enhancement

Biodiversity is an essential component of environmental analysis.

Since every territory has specific ecological characteristics, there is no standard model applicable to all projects. Measures are defined on a case-by-case basis according to the findings of the environmental studies.

Depending on the characteristics of the site, actions may be planned to promote the conservation of local habitats, the creation of refuge areas for fauna, the ecological management of vegetation or the introduction of practices compatible with biodiversity enhancement.

Plant decommissioning and land restoration

Responsibility for a solar plant does not end with its operational phase.

At the end of the plant's useful life, GDS Sole Italie is required to remove the installed infrastructure and restore the land in accordance with the authorisations and contractual commitments made.
Decommissioning procedures are defined during the permitting process through specific technical and economic studies estimating the costs and activities required for site restoration.

In many cases, regulations also require the establishment of financial guarantees in favour of the competent authorities, to protect the effective realisation of dismantling works.
This approach ensures that the land can be returned at the end of the project in conditions compatible with the future uses envisaged for the area.

An approach based on project quality

For GDS Sole Italie, the sustainability of a solar plant is measured not only through the renewable energy produced, but also through the quality of its integration into the territory.
Preventive assessment, responsible design, dialogue with stakeholders and concrete environmental mitigation measures are the fundamental elements for developing plants capable of contributing to the energy transition in respect of natural resources and the landscape.

Concrete examples of environmental integration

The Bitonto project: 2,100 new olive trees in support of the territory

As part of the development of the 12 MWp photovoltaic project in Bitonto, GDS Sole Italie financed the planting of 2,100 Xylella fastidiosa-resistant olive trees in the municipal territory, contributing to the replacement of trees compromised by the spread of the bacterium. The intervention is set within a territory particularly affected by the epidemic which, in recent years, has impacted large areas of Puglia, causing the loss of millions of olive trees and profoundly affecting the local agricultural landscape.

Through this initiative, GDS Sole Italie combined the development of the photovoltaic project with an environmental compensation measure directly linked to the needs of the territory, contributing to the regeneration of the local olive heritage and the enhancement of the rural landscape.

The Group's experience in France

The environmental approach adopted by GDS Sole Italie benefits from the experience gained by the Générale du Solaire Group in developing photovoltaic plants in France.

In the French context, the assessment of environmental impacts is an essential component of the permitting process. Each project is accompanied by in-depth specialist studies enabling potential impacts to be identified and mitigation and compensation measures appropriate to the site's characteristics to be defined.

During the construction and operation phases, actions dedicated to biodiversity protection are frequently implemented, including the creation of habitats favourable to local fauna, the conservation of existing vegetation and the ecological management of green areas through practices such as controlled grazing or differentiated mowing.

For many projects, environmental monitoring continues after commissioning through the involvement of specialists tasked with verifying over time the effectiveness of the measures adopted and the evolution of the ecosystems present on the site.

This international experience is an important resource for GDS Sole Italie, which applies the same principles of responsible design and environmental integration to projects developed on Italian territory.
